Why the headline price isn’t the full price

Comparison sites show the base rental plus CDW, theft protection, and taxes. But extras at the counter — insurance, fuel, add-ons — can double the daily rate. The key is knowing which charges are avoidable and which are built in.

Fuel policies — the biggest hidden cost

Full-to-full (best)

Collect the car with a full tank, return it with a full tank. You only pay for what you use at pump prices. This is the fairest and cheapest fuel policy.

Full-to-empty / pre-paid fuel (worst)

You pay for a full tank upfront at a premium rate. Any fuel left in the tank when you return is lost — the company keeps it. This easily adds £20–£50 per week to your bill, especially on shorter trips where you can’t burn through a full tank.

How to avoid it

Always select full-to-full when booking. Before returning the car, refuel at a petrol station near the airport — not the one right next to the rental car park, which often charges above average.

Young driver surcharges

Drivers aged 21–24 face a surcharge of £10–£30 per day at most companies. Some companies set the minimum age at 25 for certain car classes, particularly larger and premium vehicles.

A few companies in certain countries waive the fee for drivers 21 and over, but this varies. Always check the age policy before booking — the surcharge adds up fast over a week.

Additional driver fees

Adding a second driver costs £5–£15 per day at most companies. Some include one free additional driver — check at booking. The additional driver must be present at pickup with their licence.

Some credit card car hire benefits include additional drivers for free, so check your card terms before paying for the add-on.

One-way drop-off fees

Returning the car to a different location triggers a fee ranging from nothing to £300 or more, depending on the distance and the company. Same-country one-way hires are often free or cheap with major companies, while cross-border or cross-country drop-offs carry the highest fees.

The fee is shown during the comparison search, so check before you book — it’s not hidden, but it can be surprisingly high on certain routes.

Cross-border and ferry charges

Taking a hire car across a national border requires explicit permission from the rental company. Most charge a cross-border fee of £20–£100 per crossing. Some countries are excluded entirely — common restrictions apply in parts of Eastern Europe.

Ferry surcharges may also apply if you take the car on a ferry (for example, UK to France). Always declare cross-border travel when booking to avoid voiding your insurance.

Late return penalties

Returning the car late — even by an hour — can incur an extra day’s charge. Some companies offer a 29–59 minute grace period, but don’t rely on it. Plan your return with buffer time, especially if you’re driving through traffic to reach the airport.

Airport surcharges

Airport locations typically charge 5–15% more than city branches due to concession fees paid to the airport authority. This is usually baked into the comparison price, but it’s worth knowing — if your hotel is near a city-centre branch, collecting there can save money.
