Hiring a car at Cape Town Airport

Cape Town International is the gateway to the Western Cape — Table Mountain, the Winelands, and the Garden Route. A car is the best way to explore beyond the city, and South Africa is one of the most affordable countries in the world for car hire. Comparing in advance lets you lock the lowest total with free cancellation.

Where you collect the car

Cape Town International Airport is around 20 km from the city centre. Car hire companies operate from the arrivals level. Follow the "Car Rental" signs. Some suppliers are in the terminal; others are at a nearby car hire village accessible by shuttle.

What it costs

Compact car hire at CPT starts from around £14/day — excellent value for a major international destination. South Africa is one of the most affordable countries for car hire globally. Booking 3–4 weeks ahead is recommended, especially for the December–January summer holiday period.

Driving from Cape Town

South Africa drives on the left. The N1 and N2 highways connect Cape Town to the Winelands, the Garden Route, and beyond. Roads are generally well-maintained on major routes. Be aware: fuel stations may not all accept international cards — carry some cash. Avoid driving in unfamiliar areas after dark. The Garden Route (Cape Town to Port Elizabeth) is one of the world's great road trips.

Save the most at Cape Town

  • Book 3–4 weeks ahead — with free cancellation, then rebook if the price drops.
  • Choose full-to-full fuel — collect and return the tank full; never pre-pay for fuel.
  • Skip desk insurance — buy third-party cover — it's much cheaper. See our insurance notes.
  • Carry cash for fuel stations that don't accept cards.
  • Match pickup & return times — hire is billed in 24-hour blocks.
  • Consider a one-way rental for the Garden Route — pick up in Cape Town, drop off in Port Elizabeth.
