The guide

Hiring a car at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi

Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport is Thailand's main international hub. While a hire car isn't ideal for Bangkok's notoriously congested city traffic, it's the best way to explore outside the capital — from the beaches of Hua Hin to Khao Yai National Park. Comparing prices in advance locks in the lowest total with free cancellation.

Where you collect the car

Suvarnabhumi Airport is Bangkok's main international airport. Car hire counters are located in the arrivals level. Follow the "Car Rent" signs. Note: Bangkok also has Don Mueang Airport (DMK) for some domestic and low-cost flights — make sure your booking matches the correct airport.

What it costs

Compact car hire at BKK starts from around £12/day — among the cheapest in the world. Thailand is an exceptionally affordable car hire market. Prices are fairly stable year-round with modest increases around Thai holidays.

Driving from Bangkok

Thailand drives on the left. Bangkok city traffic is notoriously congested — hiring a car for Bangkok city alone is not recommended. However, a car is excellent for exploring outside the city: the beaches of Hua Hin, Khao Yai National Park, or driving north to Chiang Mai. Expressways around Bangkok charge tolls (paid in cash at booths). An international driving permit is officially required in Thailand.

Save the most at Bangkok

  • Book 2+ weeks ahead.
  • Choose full-to-full fuel (petrol is cheap in Thailand).
  • Skip desk insurance.
  • Use the car for trips outside Bangkok, not city driving.
  • Carry your IDP — police may check it.

How much does car hire at Bangkok Airport cost?
Compact car hire starts from around £12/day, among the cheapest in the world. Prices are relatively stable year-round.
Should I hire a car in Bangkok?
For the city itself, no. Bangkok traffic is extremely congested and taxis/ride-hailing are cheap and convenient. But a hire car is excellent for trips outside the city.
Do I need an international driving permit in Thailand?
Officially, yes. An IDP is required by Thai law for foreign drivers. Police may ask for it, especially outside tourist areas. Carry it along with your home licence.
Is it safe to drive in Thailand?
Main highways are well-maintained. Road safety standards differ from Europe — be cautious of motorbikes, rural roads at night, and local driving styles. Stick to major routes and avoid driving late at night.
Can I drive from Bangkok to Chiang Mai?
Yes, it's a 7–8 hour drive north. The route is straightforward via well-maintained highways. Many travellers break the journey overnight. Alternatively, fly and hire a car locally in Chiang Mai.
